January 8th-9th, Mt. Taranaki / Egmont National Park

A special thanks to Casey Kenyon for letting us use her brand new tent for this trip. Casey, it isn't quite brand new anymore... but it's working great and we're so thankful to have it! Mt. Taranaki and it's slopes were used in the filming of the Last Samurai. It definitely looked like Mt. Fuji from a distance. We ventured up the slopes of the mountain just before dark and decided the carpark would make a lovely camp spot. The weather was beautiful, and we knew we would have the opportunity to see the sunrise in the morning from this spectacular setting. An inn-keeper whose sir-name actually was "Danger" (we held back a laugh when he introduced himself), informed us earlier, that this would be a "magical" place to camp. How can you argue with a guy named Danger?? This place didn't dissapoint. In addition, the full moon and stars lit up the sky all throughout the night. (We happen to know this because a gale-force alpine wind kept us up all night - I guess that's the price you pay for beauty!)
